How long have you been in your nominated field?
Aquila Mendez-Valdez founded Haute in Texas in 2011, when she was preparing to move to San Antonio. Aquila and her college friend were both headed to the Lone Star state after getting married, and wanted to write about the communities they were moving to in the hopes of making connections and becoming better acquainted with their new hometowns. Aquila fell in love with the fashion and beauty in San Antonio, and discovered her own personal sense of style as a result. When her first daughter Cora was born in 2012 she incorporated motherhood into her growing list of topics, and Haute in Texas has been reaching a community of like-minded women in pursuit of the haute life ever since!
What professional achievements have you acquired during your years in your field?
Aquila was named a Vogue Insiders influencer in 2015, and has been published in San Antonio Magazine, the San Antonio Express-News, and The Rivard Report. She has also made several television appearances, including segments on FOX’s Daytime at 9 and ABC’s SA Live. In 2015 she was named one of Neiman Marcus’ Women Who Rock, and has participated in expert panels for the luxury retailer. She was also honored to be a nominee for Fashion Blogger of the Year at the inaugural San Antonio Fashion Awards. In 2016 she accepted a nomination to serve as Regional Co-Director for Fashion Group International, a professional organization that serves the community through their business education events and fashion trend reports.
What do you plan to do with your business to help the San Antonio Fashion Industry grow in a positive way?
In addition to donating her time serving on the board of FGI, Aquila utilizes her blog as a platform for the greater San Antonio community. Her True Beauty and Designer Dish series highlight notable fashion community members and introduce them to a larger audience. She also covers local fashion events, hosts blogger meet-ups for burgeoning fashion brands, and raises awareness for local causes whenever possible. She regularly speaks with college students and mentors young women in the hopes that she can inspire them to pursue their own careers wholeheartedly. A firm believer in the power of communication, Aquila focuses her time and energy on sharing stories, for others and herself, with the ultimate goal of helping the entire fashion community grow.
